Campy, of course, has moved past square taper, except possibly their track crank. Doubt they are too concerned about it anymore. In fact, this whole thread probably would be more appropriate in C&V, as it's the sort of discussion we might have had 25 years ago. Except for C&V and faux C&V (KOF) cranks, square taper is mostly bottom feeder stuff, of limited interest to enthusiasts. Not saying external bb is better, just that it's now and square taper is past.
