how far up the hoods are you wrapping? With 5700/6700 if you flip up the hoods you should be able to see bare cable. I just fish under with a pick then push through the opening in the shifter. Of course I always check and replace the cables as soon as I see a single fraying strand. Usually the shifting starts degrading at that point so its obvious
