Water is all you need to install them. Once it dries, they're pretty well stuck on. To remove them, get a little water in there and work it around. Once you have a little water in there, it's easy to get more in. With a little patience, you can get them off intact. Reinstall with water, and they will stick down well when the water dries.
I installed my share, 1980-83, but never on my own bike. I was not a fan.
