Remaking a Free Spirit 12 speed into a 18 speed with all new components.

I have a Sears Free Spirit 12 speed lugged steel frame bike. I'm new to bike riding though I have had this bike since it was new. I decided to start riding for exercise and am enjoying it very much. I've lost weight and I have been getting into a healthier lifestyle. My dilemma is this. I like the challenge of making this bike a touring bike. The bike, while it has a decent frame has very poor components. The brakes, cassette and crank are of rather poor quality. I'd like to go forward with a project of equip-ting this bike with a better wheels, tires, headset, group-set including bottom bracket. I have found a new, older Campagnolo Chorus 9 speed group-set that I can get for under $400. I can get a cassett for less than $50. I haven't looked into the wheels and hubs yet but will be researching all of that. One of my many questions for this group is what challenges will I encounter fitting the newer crank and bottom bracket as well as a new headset. Please remember I'm not a bike mechanic, just an old guy who wants a fun project and improve my ride on my way to better health.

Thank you.
