Someone above posted about all the people that buy a bike like you bought and are back in a few months asking about what to upgrade to. That is often the case but what we don’t see is the people that stay happy with their bike or even more often the ones that ride the bike a few times and then it sits in the garage for the next 5 years until we read about someone scoring a new condition used bike off craigslist for 1/10 the price it sold new for.
Your goal now should be to be the person that takes every opportunity to ride the bike you got with your wife and alone and enjoy it. It is not easy getting started and staying with it when you are a heavier person. It looks like your bike has an ok low gearing but not as low as I would like to see if you live in a place with any kind of hills. As you will be transporting the bikes to places to ride at first chose your rides carefully with longer distances and fewer hills. Work into the hilly rides slowly and when you feel you are ready and remember getting off and pushing is completely ok. Keep the bike out where you see it every day and let it be a reminder that you need to get on and ride it. Start out with shorter distances and add a little each time even if it is just around the block in the evening for a 10 minute ride.
Stay engaged with the forum it is a great way to stay motivated.
Enjoy.
Thanks for the tips and perspective! My wife will be a good motivator on her own, as she has a great habit of stick-to-it-iveness. I got a treadmill a few years ago (as many folks do) and never really used it much. Just couldn't get into the whole staying stationary for exercise, and I'm so hot natured and sweaty that the prospect of getting out and walking/jogging didn't attract me. Biking, to me, is a great combo of changing scenery and a nice breeze in your face to keep you cool(er). I'm excited for these things to come in, as Oct-Dec are really awesome weather-wise in the deep south, so I can't wait to surprise her and get out and ride.
