Besides being obviously fishy sounding, it's a well known scam that has been around in one form or another for a long time. I'm always amazed when you see the occasional news story of someone who got sucked in and lost money and/or merchandise.
Well clearly it works or the scammers wouldn't keep doing it. It's especially effective on the elderly.
