There have been threaded 1" longest , threaded 1.125" common less , but still used .
I have 2 'folding' bikes with threaded 9/8" steerers..

In 1" the tube was thicker at the Bottom, as stiffness increases with diameter
the steerer became a straight tube.. which lowers MFG cost a bit.

now threadless is most new bike production..
