A lot of the 80s ATBs were designed with dual dropout and fork end eyelets as well as rear rack braze one and many with mid-fork low rider rack attachment points.

Many people have used them for "rough stuff" tourers. IMO, there's a whole lot of similarity between a lot of 80's ATBs and something like the Surly Long Haul Trucker.
