Unless you need to carry more than one bike, why not carry it inside? I do.
It will not fit unless I take off both the front and rear tire...and to be honest, I don't want (ie: I'm too lazy to if there is an easier way) to have to remove and reattach both wheels every time I go for a bike ride.
