Yes, shoes make a huge difference. How big and where the tabs of the pedals are also makes a big difference. (I've been known to make bigger tabs to my pedals. Also counterweight them to improve pickup.)

You might try plastic toeclips. They can be lighter and more forgiving when you do crunch them.

And last, yes they are consumables. I have been though probably 50 pairs.
