i'm pretty sure that is when the changeover to higher capacity batteries occurred. if you have an older unit, then a battery dying in 2 years is possible.
if you have a newer road unit, then that really should not happen. most units have battery life >=1,900h (the shimano unit is rated for 3,000h).
this varies a bit depending on usage (long periods of inactivity are worse), and most units get longer life than rated.
sounds like either (a) you have an older unit, (b) you have a MTB or other unit (those are physically smaller due to need to accommodate smaller rings, so smaller batteries as well, or (c) there is a problem.
my guess is (a).

[MENTION=99188]tetonrider[/MENTION] - It's a PM6 on what looks like a first generation Red crankset. I bought it used in January of last year. I'm pretty sure it falls into the "older unit" category. It's on my Look 585, one of the three road bikes I use.
