Obviously with a fully geared-up bike you can't just lock it up outside and risk loosing everything.
That's what I do. I do tend to avoid big cities. I do use my spidey-sense to get a feel for the surrounds. Never had a problem. Strangely it turns out the world is full of nice people and most who are not have little interest in a cycle-tourist's smelly clothes
