I've also wondered why a brace is needed so close to a massive casting as the bottom bracket. Some chain stay braces are only braces and have no provision for fenders or kick stands. Its possible they do next to nothing more than make the frame fancier. They could add a bit of stiffness to the rear triangle when high lateral loads are subjected by heavy riders in fast and tight turns.
