You could go as narrow as 27x1, although they are not as easy to find. 27x1 1/8 is pretty common. I have a pair of Nashbar Prima 2 Plus in 27x1 1/4 that measure just a hair over 1 inch when mounted. For most people on this forum, Panaracer Pasela is the only choice when looking for 27 inch tires. They have the right combination of look, ride, and price.

I bought a dark blue Royale in Orlando, in 1980 and rode it everywhere. It was stolen when I was in Virginia and recovered, then stolen again in California in 1984. I replaced it with a Miyata that I still ride.
