I have Sidi Genius 5 shoes, which are ratchet and velcro. The velcro has a row of hard nylon latches built into the shoe and the pull tab. Not sure if it works, but I think that the theory is that when you fasten the velcro, it engages the latches so that they take some of the shear force. In ~2 years of riding, the velcro seems fine - not at all "worn out".

In any case, these are comfortable for me, and I don't have to tweak them mid-ride. I seem to recall that my old Detto Pietros always needed adjustment.

But if you can find a pair of laced shoes you like, and they work for you, why not?
