But before committing (how big a commitment is it, anyway) to using a smartphone app, it pays to address the issue of battery life management. Being able to call for help is more important than tracking my ride, so I don't want the app to drain the battery and render the phone useless. I think I've got the problem under control, and there are various ways to do it.
