The less expensive housing was outside of Grand Junction area like Fruita. The only drawback was if you were a frequent flyer the closest major airports were either Denver or Salt Lake City. But you could climb Colorado Monument daily!!!
I was just about to suggest Grand Junction or Fruita. We retired here because of the grandkids, and the great biking environment and close-knit biking community are a bonus. The climate is mild enough. I know several couples who retired here (and in Fruita) specifically because of the biking.
