As for the OP if it hasn't been sufficiently answered, no they are entirely different braking systems. The only thing they really even have in common is the top of the bar position.
I like dork discs on my off-road bicycles. I use the BIGGEST ones I can get. I feel they're well worth it if for any reason a derailler goes past the biggest cog since the dork disc saves the spokes from getting cut up by the chain. I sens wrecked wheels where a jumped chain has cut and broken a number of drive side spokes and the wheel was rendered not rideable. Since i often ride alone and can't call for a pick up if something like that happens I'll use a dork disc.
