"Resorting" to dismantling the hub may have been a better choice - and still is. You now have a horrible mish-mash of lubricant and solvent inside your hub, and have no idea what other things in the hub may need attention. Any grease that was in the bearings is now probably gone as well. 3 speed overhaul is not very difficult at all. I have literally taught a 12 year old to do so.
