3 yrs ago I moved back to the Fatherland and started as a freelancer with family in tow.
The risk of crashing in a crit without having the luxury of laying in a hospital and still getting paid made the decision clear, even though it wasn't an easy one.
I do once in a while peruse the website of the German cycling club and see if there are any road races or crits nearby and the itch starts... but responsibility for my family erases those thoughts rather quickly.
So I commute every day to work, ride my MTB with a couple of collegues in the Alps on the weekends and just enjoy pedaling in general without the adrenalin rush of close quarter riding at 25mph+.
It's better that way. Or so I tell myself.
