Thanks juvela! I am the aforementioned Dad who bought the bike as a project to work on with my son. I read on Sheldon Brown's site that the French made bars and stems have a reputation for breaking so I will be changing those out soon. I have passed the info on to my son to lower that stem into the head tube more. Thanks again!
