I generally pick a bike I like so don't really do mods, I just adapt what I have; I generally depend on good essential universal accessories. For me these are a good waterproof backpack (missions workshop), a bright headlight because I commute on trails through woods (up to 1200 lumen Lezyne megadrive), a powerful taillight for the road parts of my commute (60 lumen Serfas), and a good compact saddle bag and toolkit (topeak with Lezyne etc. tools). These allow me to commute on any bike I choose, and my old garmin 500.
