Fairly often, yes. I use my two panniers as carry ons. That's all the gear I carry for a cross country trip. I only use the roll on, roll off service. In February I'll be taking Amtrak from Portland, Oregon to San Diego to start the Southern Tier. I've used in the past to get home from tours (from Chicago via Green Bay and from San Diego twice).
If I have to box my bike I have Performance Bike ship it (between $50 & $75 including packing etc) and then fly.
