Bikes: Marin Four Corners, 1960's Schwinn Racer in middle of restoration, mid 70s Motobecane Grand Touring, various other heaps.

I'd say used is your best bet. $500 goes pretty darn far on the used market if you can bear to wait a few weeks until you see something that works.
