What kind of fluid do bicycle systems use? I've ridden motorcycles for 20 yrs with both DOT 3 & 4(glycol) and DOT 5(silicon) through the winter;never any probs with my brakes. I've ridden in single digits(plus wind chill for highway speeds).

To the OP:It's been awhile since I had my Sirrus Sport Disc, but if memory serves, you should be able to fit a set of 32 width cylocross tires.

Disc brakes are the best for winter. Nothing wrong with the cable units. Plus,if the Sirrus is your only ride, you prolly don't want to run it through the salt. I'm currently using a Giant Sedona with discs for my bad weather bike. It's heavy, but it gets the job done with an upright riding position, fat tires, and disc brakes. I'd advise a cheap(price) MTB with discs, rigid or hardtail. And maybe two sets of tires;a set of 1.5-1.75's with some tread for regular riding, and a set of 2"+ or studded for actual snow/ice.
