1973 Raleigh RRA bottom bracket

Hello everyone, this is my first post.

I am in the process of restoring a 1973 Raleigh RRA. Always wanted one. As part of the restoration I removed all the parts for cleaning and polishing including the Stronglight bottom bracket. To my surprise the spindle is 120mm vs the 118mm I was expecting. I did not think much about it at the time but noticed when reinstalling the bb that the 120mm spindle makes the drive side crank sit outboard of where it seems it should. It appears to me that the chain line will be off. Also, the clearance of the crank arms to the chain stays is different between the two sides as you would expect given the outboard location of the drive side crank.

So then I looked at Verktyg's photos of his 'barn find' and the photos show the same outboard location of the drive side crank arm. Based on that the 120mm spindle must have been correct for the RRA. Any ideas what is up with this? Thanks!
