Mountain v Road pedals and shoes: Pros and Cons

I have a pair of SPD mountain bike pedals on my cyclocross bike I use primarily for commuting and recreation. My shoes are getting a little worn and my pedals are about 5 years old. Since pedals aren't all that expensive, I was thinking about getting a pair of road shoes and pedals. Most of my riding and walking is on pavement, and I'll do a moderate amount of off-bike walking.

Before I commit to the switch, I wanted to get some input. I've heard that if you are doing more than a little walking, it might make more sense to stick with mountain pedals/shoes since they are usually more comfortable and easier to walk in. Is this true, or is it worth it to go ahead and get road shoes/pedals? Thanx
