Plenty of folks tour while using a smartphone to navigate. I knew one kid who had a folding solar charging panel on top of his rear gear, kept his phone at near 100% all day. Went across the US this way, never looked at a paper map.

Wouldn't do that personally and not in your circumstances maybe, but there are ways to keep stuff charged.
