rootboy and FB inNY have it right. You can get it close, probably straight enough for it to be fine. Safety is not likely a problem, and if it breaks on the rear wheel with horizontal DOs at least the wheel won't fall off. If you can get it straight enough to fit into a straight axle then it will be fine. The tension from tightening it will keep it straight enough.
