I tried it with a leather scrap that I formed into a bowl, but it does apparently need to be made as a straight-sided bowl, not a rounded one as I did it. The cup I made was far too thick, and I should have let it dry thoroughly, so I'll give it another go. I can see that it's do-able, just gotta stick with it.
Well, good news. It wasn't the leather cup I made for the pump, turned out it was the needle in the inflator hose which wouldn't seal on the return stroke. Used a hose from my Zefal frame pump and it worked like a champ. Just ordered a replacement Sunlite hose from Niagara Cycle.
