Well, good news. It wasn't the leather cup I made for the pump, turned out it was the needle in the inflator hose which wouldn't seal on the return stroke. Used a hose from my Zefal frame pump and it worked like a champ. Just ordered a replacement Sunlite hose from Niagara Cycle.
