When I was working at a Los Angeles area bike shop chain in the early 1970s, one of the branch managers spent multiple hundreds of dollars on a new Colnago, and I suggested we take a ride up Tuna Canyon (12 percent average grade for about 3 miles in the hills of Malibu) to break it in. He got to the first switchback, said, "This is BS," and turned around to head home. I completed the climb, proving the superiority of my $150 Nishiki Competition.
