So I should ask...what tires are you running. The Panaracers I have on there are 27 x 1 1/4 and they honest seem to be a little on the large side and I think that may be part of the problem.
Our Sprite has Schwalbe Marathons in 27 1 1/4. I haven't had the tire off in a while (I hart me some Schwalbes), but don't recall it being a tight fit. My guess is that the bike probably came with tires that size or maybe 27 1 1/8, but that's not much smaller. Aren't the rims marked with the recommended tire size? I'd check, but it's cold out there and the original wheels are in the rafters of the garage.
