On our local Craigslist, every bike that has even a touch of carbon is touted as 'carbon'. So an alu bike with a carbon fork, or carbon fork and stays is invariably transformed to 'carbon'. Of course, buyers see right through this, and these bikes sit unsold, sometimes for months.
Same with the labelling: 'road bike'. These days, you cannot give away a 26"-wheel MTB, so every cheap hardtail is transformed into a 'road bike' by replacing the knobbies with slicks.
Similar to 1972, when every bike had to be a '10-speed'. In those days, every beach cruiser, British 3-speed and Schwinn tank became a '10-speed'.
5 years from now, when the 'road bike' thing has flamed out, you won't be able to give them away. Then they'll be transformed into: 'Gravel endurance tricycles with disc breaks'. Or whatever the industry has moved onto....
