Welcome aboard, nothing insane about building one up. I just finished a vintage build, it is very satisfying to accomplish it. As said, it can be more expensive if you aren't careful. The Mechanics and Mountain Bike Forums will be good places to start, and don't count out building a nice vintage hard tail MTB either, the C&V Forum can help you with this.
