I started obsessing about turbo trainers, power meters and trainerroad this winter. However I never bought anything. I still have my $58 magnetic trainer and cadence sensor.
I kept getting delayed by other non cycle related items. Just all the random stuff a family of four needs. I try very hard to never use my credit card or use any of our savings. While delayed, I would just do more and more internet research to be ready for that glorious shopping day.
Today though, I realized after a pretty rough 60 second hard 60 second rest interval on my current trainer, that it's all in my head. I can get an intense workout with the simplest of gear.
In all honesty, I have no business spending $1000+ on more gear. Why not put $1,000 in a mutual fund or on the mortgage. Hobbies and enjoyment in life are important but I have already spent $2,000 on this hobby. On to the next thing while still sweating on the magnetic and taking awesome outdoor rides when I can.
You are, very mature. Let me just say at 60 I have found that incorporating cycling into my everyday activities was all I needed to get in much better shape (not that I'm an athlete or anything). But if I need an intense workout I go to the aldi across the river and ride big hills home with groceries. I admire your financial restraint. Wish I was better at it.
I also keep my bike expenditures fairly low by using the local co-op.
