Clydesdale rider here and getting 2200 out of a Conti GP 4000 II is great for me. so 3000 on a tire would be a miracle!
I don't know about Michelin but Conti has those little dot/pit wear indicators on the center tread of the tire (figuring that is what the OP means when he said top of the tire).
Though I do run mine a bit over that till I get a flat. Then I swap the tire.
Plus I do buy tires online for $35 of so vs the $75 at the local shops and I always have a stash so I never have to worry about when it is time to swap the tires.
