Oxley, they were granite to get started, but once rolling they were like a tandem, you could just kill your friends riding over rollers where the bike's momentum would carry you up and over and they you'd peddle like crazy going down hill to roll up and over again as they were red faced puffing to catch up.
You could also almost always win a coast down with one of these bikes too. There's something only childhood remembers, going like crazy until you reached an agreed spot and then no pedaling, laying flat on the handlebar and coasting until you had to put your foot out or fall on your side. Longest coaster won.
Yeah, not too long ago I had a '69 Racer 3-speed (lightweight?) and once you got moving inertia helped out a lot as long as the hill wasn't pointed up. My wife still has a '64 Collegiate 5-speed that she loves.
