from my understanding, "hard anodizing" refers to a thick coating of aluminum oxide, which ends up a dull dark grey color. But it's pretty dark. Attached are pics of Mavic MA40 (which I rode on my first nicer road bike in high school) and H+Son TB14 (a modern take on the classic box-section rim).

I'm pretty sure actual black color would be a result of a thin, dye-infused anodizing.
