That had nothing to do with the bell. Whether your presence was legal or not, the pedestrians have the right-of-way on a sidewalk. That's why it's called a sidewalk, not a sideride. While they might have done you the courtesy of moving over, they weren't required to - and obviously didn't. Maybe next time you can try staying in the road, even it it doesn't offer the imaginary protection provided by the solid white line of a bike lane.
