You say you have no knowledge of bikes. Sellers can be the same way. If the bike needs any mechanical work, and you pay someone to do it, or replacement parts you can be upside down on the value. If it's an early '80's Trek 720 then grab it. If it's something like this photo, maybe not.
There are several thousand pages here that will answer the question: "is there any bikes you can recommend"?
Can I ask why down on the 820? Genuinely curious. I have a Trek 800 MTB I use for Touring. I'd love to know if there are some issues that I should be aware of.
