More glue offers nothing over 100% coverage and contact. It makes things squishy. Less glue is better IF you have 100% contact. More glue is better if you are breaking seal hitting bumps and need to re-seal. The articles you cited may have authors that don't know that.
Anyway can over rim works well.
I don't believe that there is such a thing as "breaking seal over bumps". IMO if the tire is glued properly, it doesn't come unstuck at any point in the circumference ever until you remove it. No need to reseal ever. The beauty of the gluing tape is that it provides fully coverage, 100% contact and as perfect adhesion as possible with the minimal amount of adhesive so no "squishy".
