The brake caliper on Safari is also very close to the spokes on the front wheel. The gap is only about 1 mm. If the front wheel becomes warped (= not true) then the caliper might come into contact with the spokes. Trek 720 was recalled on 1/19 for this very issue.
Indeed, and my safari started doing it ever so slightly. I re-tensioned the spokes and checked true, and it's been fine ever since. The Mazama on the other hand looked like it would require either uneven side to side tensioning or installing a larger rotor, which would raise the caliper assembly. In the end I'm glad I ended up with the Safari, I like it a lot better than I did the Mazama.
