Food for thought. A BIG bastard file would shave that straight down piece to a curved (concave) shape, to accommodate that fender, without compromising strength.
thought of that last night as I installed wider fenders. took an angle grinder to the straight down piece to make room for the bracket but cudn't get enough material off. also since the fenders are wider the sides hit the fork. instead of cutting the sides making a space for the forks, since the bracket didn't have enough room, I just cut the darn thing in half again. I'll probably revisit the brackets to lift them a bit more like last time. I understand now what you mean about using duct tape to span the gap between the 2 halves
