Damn thing was fast but you couldn't afford to put gas in it.

I still remember oil changes every 2,000-2,500 miles, points and plugs every 10,000, maybe wires every 20-30,000 miles, valve adjustments and then valve jobs, brake jobs every 30,000, tires every 30,000, tranny overhauls, radiator repairs, ball joints, shocks every 40k or so. Then, there was body repair and re-paint because they were rust buckets.

Yep, those were great times in the automobile industry.
Your original point is spot on, though. Keeping those cars running smoothly was a pain in the ass unless you could do your own work as a labor of love. Only time I did my own work was out of poverty.

Points? What a super-duper pain in the ass!! I'm so glad those carburetor and tuneup days are gone.
