I am not a modem guru but it looks like we need a combo modem plus router, which from what I can tell doubles the price to roughly 200. Will do more research before we make a final decision, of course

Most modems have a router built-in these days. I still like to have a dedicated router also, but it's not necessary for most folks.
You could always step up to the three router solution to keep hackers from getting in to your network via your fridge or toaster
