Cute anecdote but not common, and he was probably a newbie. I've NEVER done that. I remember when I first started touring and only used old-school paper maps (1970's) I'd stop and have to ask the locals to point to the un-labeled road. I guess the info they gave me was generally right --> HALF the time. Give me Google-maps and iPhone-GPS any time over that!
