Cyclocross bikes have knobby 35's, plus some clearance above that for mud. So you're probably going to run out of width between the chainstays before you run out of height. Slick 38's are probably OK, 42's are probably pushing it.

It's got a Panaracer Firecross 45 in the front and a Racing Ralph 32 in the rear. Would like to have the Firecross mounted in both ends, but the frame is quite tight. So it's about 1/2 monstercross.
