None of this is needed for a Shimano chain joined using their specific pin. What they lack is the ability to easily remove and reinstall the chain for cleaning of the bike. For that, master links are far better.
Not needed for KMC or other quick link closed chains either..
Not needed for IGH chains either (I put in a half link, just to open the chain in the same place each time..
80's sedis sport chains were easy to deal with, with a common chain tool, too.
