You could also easily spend $5k on a custom steel touring rig with all the best components on it factoring in racks, bags, lights, fenders, etc., and wind up with a 30 lb. bike. Some of the best touring stuff is really expensive.
+1. In fact, you could probably spend $5K for such a bike alone. Add the accessories and it gets way up there. Shoot. My current Nitto racks Rivendell retail for $220 each. My original set of Beckman Designs custom racks and panniers set me back over $900 back in 1999.
