Weight and gearing both matter. I can tell a huge difference when on my commuter, with my stuff, going uphill compared to my sub 20 pound road bike going up the same hills. It's a bit of an extreme comparison...the commuter when loaded up is probably around 35 pounds. Gearing is not exactly the same but is fairly close. Times don't even come close when reviewing Strava.
